The role

What an emcee actually does

Most of the work happens before anyone hears a microphone. The emcee owns the order of events, holds the timings, and makes sure every person walking up to speak knows when and how they're being introduced.

Before the event
Reviews your run sheet and flags the gaps
Confirms name pronunciations and titles
Agrees cues with your venue and AV team
Rehearses the opening and the awards order
On the night
Opens the room and sets the tone
Introduces speakers, couples and award winners
Holds the timings without rushing anyone
Handles the unplanned — late speeches, no-shows, room changes
The judgement calls
Knows when to talk and when to get off the mic
Keeps the language clean and the jokes safe
Never puts a senior leader or a nervous speaker on the spot
